Creating a Base Line for Construction Progress Management
Client: Main Contractor, Auckland
Project Type: Construction Management
Scope: Create a Baseline for Progress Management
OBJECTIVE
To establish an accurate, visual baseline for ongoing progress tracking and quality assurance using Vault’s 360 Camera Walkthrough system integrated with Computer Vision techniques.
CHALLENGES
- Manual inspections were time-consuming and inconsistently documented.
- Defects such as rust, cracking, water pooling, and exposed wiring were detected and plotted automatically
SOLUTION
The project team deployed Vault's Plan Viewer Application, capturing comprehensive 360° video footage of the construction site at regular intervals and plotting this both onto the 3D model and General Layout Diagrams. This footage was analysed using Computer Vision algorithms to detect early signs of quality or safety issues.
IMPLEMENTATION STEPS
Route Planning & Execution:
- Key paths were identified throughout the structure (floorplates, plant rooms, risers).
- 360° walkthroughs were carried out using wearable cameras synced with Vault’s location-tracking system.
Data Ingestion & Processing:
- Vault’s platform geolocated the walkthrough footage and indexed it chronologically.
- Video data was made navigable and accessible across the project team.
Computer Vision Analysis:
- Rust Detection: Identified early signs of oxidisation on exposed steel beams.
- Water Pooling: Detected standing water or surface inconsistencies on concrete floors.
- Hairline Cracking: Flagged linear fractures in slabs, particularly near load paths.
- Exposed Wiring: Highlighted visible electrical cabling not yet properly enclosed or protected.
Issue Tagging & Reporting:
- Auto-detected issues were reviewed by the QA/QC team.
- Confirmed findings were logged with visual markers and spatial coordinates within Vault.
KEY BENEFITS
- Establishes a Visual Baseline: A traceable, site-wide visual history from Day 1.
- Proactive Issue Detection: Potential problems addressed before escalating.
- Minimised Rework: Reduced reactive fixes and associated cost.
- Improved Stakeholder Engagement: Walkthroughs enabled clearer communication with clients and subcontractors.
TESTIMONIAL
"Vault’s 360 Camera Walkthrough, combined with AI analysis, has completely transformed our approach to quality control. It’s helped us catch issues early, cut inspection time, and build trust with stakeholders."
— Peter Smith, Senior Project Manager
